On Avenel Avenue in Roanoke, Jean Quade asked neighbors if she could dig up part of a back lot that had been weeds, privet, and trash cans, WDBJ7 reported. She thought she would plant a small section. It grew large enough to be certified as a Monarch Waystation, a designation neighbor Karen Layman described as a public sign that the garden is meant to support monarchs on migration.
Neighbors who had not met before started pulling weeds, trading plants, and bringing children. Joyce Dixon, 87, told the station the company matters to her. Quade said the gardens bring people together.
