Ukandu has offered a free week-long camp since 1986 for children with cancer, ages 8 to 18, and their siblings. Since 2022 it has also offered a free family week on the Oregon coast. The Loft, a year-round center of about 22,000 square feet in Portland's Lair Hill neighborhood, is set to open Oct. 21. Families are not using it yet.
The building will have a two-story climbing wall, an arts and crafts room, and a lounge for caregivers. Free mental health counseling will be available for children, adolescents, and parents, along with support groups and upcoming workshops on financial literacy and cooking.
