Kanbe's Markets has spent a decade intercepting produce that wholesalers would otherwise discard. KCTV reported on October 8, 2026, that the Kansas City nonprofit has kept 6 million pounds of food from going to waste and is on pace to save 3 million pounds this year alone. Volunteer engagement manager John Couture told the station that one blemished piece of fruit can get a whole pallet rejected.

Usable produce goes to food pantries or to independently owned corner stores, where it is sold for less than a grocery price. Some of it becomes feed at rescue farms and sanctuaries. What cannot be eaten is composted. Couture said the group works with more than 50 food-assistance partners and needs more volunteers to keep up.
