Effingham County has a new place to swap books, and it sits outside the sheriff's office. WTOC reported on September 28, 2026, that deputies unveiled a little free library at the administration building in Springfield. Anyone can take a book or leave one, at no cost.
Volunteer Amanda West led the project. Her husband, Will West, is a sergeant with the agency. She told WTOC she wanted a library because reading builds empathy and gives people a free escape. Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie said he hopes children and families will use the box. It is registered with Little Free Library, the nonprofit that supports neighborhood book exchanges.
