Hallsville West Elementary has put more than 1,000 books into students' hands through a vending machine in the main hallway. KLTV reported on October 6, 2026, that the Greater Longview United Way honored the school for the milestone. A United Way Read to Succeed grant paid for the machine five years ago, when the campus opened.
Students earn a book by being named student of the month for Leader in Me habits. Each month, 38 students, one from each class, pick a title after an assembly. Librarian Joy Snider said that pace, on a campus of nearly 700 students, is what carried the machine to 1,000 books. She credited United Way's five years of funding, library paraprofessional Ellie Warren, and the school's teachers.
