Wylie E. Groves High School in Birmingham used the halftime of its powderpuff game on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for Victory Day. Middle and high school students with cognitive and physical impairments played football or cheered, each paired with a Groves player or cheerleader.
The program started 16 years ago in Trenton after a teacher's idea, and it now reaches dozens of Michigan districts. Head coach Brendan Flaherty said it gives Special Olympics athletes a moment in the sun and builds empathy in the school.
