Michael Jensen has volunteered at the Jefferson County Food Bank in Port Townsend for about five months. The Peninsula Daily News reported on October 8, 2026, that a post he wrote on Reddit drew a burst of new support. Between September 28 and October 2, 47 first-time donors gave $2,854.60. One of those gifts came from the Netherlands.

The food bank relies on a large volunteer bench, about 120 people in Port Townsend and roughly 300 across the county, board vice president Sonja Mathews told the paper. Clients often ask to take less than they are offered. Eligibility follows an honor system tied to an income guideline of 400 percent of the poverty level. Jensen, a traveling writer who is leaving town this month with his husband, credited the longtime volunteers who keep the shelves moving.
