Dozens of volunteers spent Saturday morning in Haslett cutting lumber, sanding headboards, and driving screws for the Lansing chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace. WILX reported that the open build day was aimed at children who do not have a bed. Chapter president Jarrod Olsen said people think of food, shelter, and clothes, and often miss a bed.
The chapter builds close to 1,000 beds a year and still carries a rolling wait list of 100 to 200 families in mid-Michigan. Each bed costs about $300 once it has a mattress and bedding. About half of the money comes from individual donations. Delivery crews keep building through snow, rain, and heat.
