Fifth-grader Raymond Chen was in the family pool in Covina when his mother, Jade Chen, got a leg cramp and started to sink. She thought she might die. Raymond knew he was too small to pull her out, so he pushed her to the poolside instead.

Irwindale police and the Covina Valley Unified School Board recognized him. When Jade asked why he had not called an adult, he said he thought she might die before he saw her again.
