An Eastern red bat found struggling in the surf on a Maine beach is eating again. Popular Science reported on October 8, 2026, that the Center for Wildlife in Cape Neddick shared footage of the bat working through a plate of mealworms. Executive director Kristen Lamb told the magazine the bat was very lethargic when she arrived and is now feisty and active.

Eastern red bats are one of eight bat species in southern Maine. A good appetite is a recovery sign for this animal. It is not a count of how the species is doing along the coast.
